Because so many low-income families live in informal housing in Cambodia, security of tenure is an issue of concern. The Asian Coalition for Community Action (ACCA), operated by the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR) works to ensure housing rights and prevent evictions of low-income populations in Asian cities through a variety of activities including community savings, supporting community development funds, natural disaster relief, and policy advocacy, in which ACHR activities are integrated into government policies.
For most of ACCA’s big projects, the focus is on housing provision, and local governments play an important role, providing infrastructure, technical assistance, and building materials. In Indonesia, ACCA worked with architects to map and survey an informal settlement. They then set up a women’s savings group in connection with other informal settlements, established a citywide revolving loan fund for home improvements, and negotiated long term leases for the settlement.
