Though South Africa has made significant progress over the past two decades to increase its supply of affordable housing, there still remains a need for housing solutions. In an attempt to create more housing units, the South African government has diversified the housing production tools available, with a particular focus on rental housing. AFD supported this goal of increasing low-cost rental housing by providing the National Housing Finance Corporation (NHFC) with a concessional loan, contributing to policy development, and promoting the financing of real estate projects with high urban and social value added.
Largely, this project has been a success, with the rehabilitation of buildings in Johannesburg, the creation of social housing units, and the social and economic integration of housed families, which increased density, reduced sprawl, and minimized infrastructure costs.
