The Banco Hipotecario del Uruguay (BHU) is an autonomous bank with government support aimed at holding continuous and competitive credit offers that provide housing solutions to families. The subsidies provided by BHU strive to reach those who have the capacity to pay a fee, but lack the previous savings to purchase a home. BHU offers multiple kinds of financial products, ranging from a Mortgage Loan Guarantee Fund to savings programs that matches savings with a subsidy.
In 2019, BHU placed 989 mortgage loans, shortened purchasing times for homes, and allowed for people in the savings programs to obtain financing greater than that of non-saving clients. Good practices implemented include a targeted and differentiated subsidy line, interest rate subsidies, effective communication style, and access to technical support.
